Sourcing Context & Procurement Challenge
Savings reporting lacked consistency and credibility, with different regions using varying definitions and baselines. Finance questioned the reliability of reported results, which undermined procurement’s strategic credibility. The challenge was to implement a standardized savings methodology that could stand up to internal and external audits.
Procurement Objectives & Strategic Levers
The objective was to create a globally accepted, finance-aligned savings framework that differentiated between hard and soft savings, cash vs. P&L impact, and baselines. Strategic levers included stakeholder co-design, integration with financial reporting, and periodic audits by internal control functions.
Sourcing Strategy & Execution Approach
Procurement created a savings taxonomy, defined baseline logic, and designed templates embedded into procurement tools. The policy was jointly signed off by the CFO and CPO, and rolled out with mandatory usage across all sourcing projects. Quarterly audit reviews were instituted to validate reported savings.
Results & Values Delivered
Transparency improved dramatically, and procurement regained Finance’s trust as a value contributor. Savings reports became fully audit-proof and aligned with financial books. Reported savings were no longer questioned – they became a credible, CFO-endorsed metric for performance tracking.
Role & Contribution
We initiated the methodology development and managed stakeholder alignment across Procurement, Finance, and Internal Audit. We trained global category leads and ensured tool integration for seamless reporting. I also chaired the savings audit steering committee.
Conclusion & Reflections
In procurement, value without credibility is worthless. This project proved that methodology is the bridge between performance and recognition. Procurement must speak the language of Finance – with discipline, transparency, and repeatability.
